PSP Firmware 2.0
PSP Browser screen

About a half a year ago, I received a Sony PSP as a kind B-day gift but up to now, I've totally neglected it, and it's been doing nothing more than collecting dust in my closet. The problem is, I hardly don't play any video games anymore as slowly day by day, I'm becoming more and more of an oyaji here in Tokyo. Yes, sad but true. (>.<) Ahem.

Besides the lack of game titles which would interest me, the basic features of the PSP are not terribly attractive to me to begin with. I find the PSP to be kinda 中途半端 (chuuto-hanpa) as they say in Japanese, meaning "halfway, in between" or how I simply like to say, "halfass". The size is compact but kinda on the biggie side if you want to use it as a portable MP3/music player. As a pseudo DVD/Divx/AVI/etc video player, you can import compressed video formats by converting the files, but because of memory limitations in Sony's proprietary memory sticks, the size and length of video files are limited, and bringing down the image/audio quality and frame rates is not something I like or particularly want to waste my time on. As for its proprietary supported media type UMDs, I can't help but think it's going to be the next minidisks, meaning a media format which never quite makes it big in the market. The one good feature of the PSP may be using it as a mobile photo/image manager+viewer, but I already use my keitai (cell phone) as such.

So yeah, it's been gathering a serious amount of dust. I borrowed one game (Ridge Racer) and played it for like 10 minutes, that's all.

I was even thinking of selling it over the net but just last week, Sony announced the release of PSP Firmware 2.0. The biggest change is, with this upgrade, the PSP now has a built in web browser. The browser supports HTML 4.01, Javascript, etc (No Flash support though), so most "general" web pages can be viewed for casual browsing. In addition, the browser also supports multiple tabs. Other upgrades for this firmware version include support for other file types (mp4 (h.264), aac, wav, bmp/gif/png/tiff, etc), functions to send pictures in ad-hoc mode, changing the default background screen, etc.

So with all this said and done, I'll be pulling out my dusted up PSP now, as it'll be my ghetto wireless web browser for my wireless lan @ home and Wifi areas elsewhere.

On that score I'm no judge of each other's arms, or an idee that lies some fifty miles off, and was altogether a matter of course.

So Ken recently posted an entry on his blog about his comments on the Sony PSP's 2.0 firmware. Being that he is out in Japan, he didn't have to wait as long as those of us in the US, who...
